Correct grammar and spelling is a must. Although not all employers take the time to read a cover letter, those who do could perceive mistakes as indicators of your quality as a candidate.
Customize the cover letter to the position for which you are applying. Do not say, "The position appears to fit my skills and experience," unless you also tell them why.
